The gift card industry's trade body is urging employers to wait for clarification of an EU ruling on VAT on retail vouchers as part of salary sacrifice schemes.

The European Court of Justice has said drugs company AstraZeneca should pay VAT on retail vouchers given to staff as part of a salary sacrifice scheme.

The judgement has prompted fears in the industry that many employers will drop schemes rather than meet the increased cost of admistering them.
